New to Emberville? 12 pre-launch tips from hands-on previews: first class, stats, masteries, town rebuilding, and what to do first.
Emberville Beginner Guide: 12 Tips to Start Strong
Quick answer: Emberville is a dungeon-crawling action RPG wrapped around town rebuilding. Go in expecting a loop — descend into the Vitromotus for loot and rescues, return to town to rebuild and craft, and level everything by using it. Your first class is the Wanderer, your first boss is the Spider Matriarch, and death is never the end.
Emberville is not out yet (Early Access begins October 27, 2026). Every tip below comes from official sources and hands-on preview builds, and is labeled so you know what is confirmed versus what may change.

1. Learn the Core Loop First
Previewers from IGN, COGconnected, and WayTooManyGames all describe the same rhythm: wake in the Vitromotus prison with no memories, fight and gather on the way out, arrive in ruined Emberville, then keep diving back down for materials, rescues, and loot while the town grows around you. If you understand this loop, every system clicks into place. Details: How the Vitromotus Works.
2. Your First Class Is the Wanderer
You unlock the Wanderer early by talking to a strange old man in the dungeon, and its skill tree runs to level 40. Early picks like Focus Strike (a heavy punch) and Swift Foot (movement speed) were standouts in the WayTooManyGames preview. You are never locked in — swap classes freely for each situation. Full breakdown: Classes Guide.
3. Spend Your 2 Stat Points Every Level
Each level grants 2 attribute points across six attributes: Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Wisdom, Stamina, and Luck. Strength favors heavy weapons, Dexterity favors bows, Intelligence favors staves. Do not hoard points — the preview builds reward spending them immediately. See Stats and Attributes.
4. Level Gear by Using It
Weapons, armor, and even crafting skills level through use, not through a separate XP bar. Hover any weapon to see its level, XP, and unlocked combos. Pick one melee weapon and one ranged option early so both stay relevant. More: Weapon Masteries and Armor Masteries.
5. Inherit Skills Across Classes
The signature system: level a class, then carry its active and passive skills into another class. A fast bow character running a Wanderer movement passive is exactly the kind of mix previewers recommend. Read Skill Inheritance Explained.
6. Death Is a Mechanic, Not a Failure
The Vitromotus resurrects everyone — that is the lore (see Kymia). The IGN preview opens with a hooded figure vaporizing the player, who simply pops back into existence. Pushing deeper after a death is normal; the prison expects it.
7. Break Furniture, Grab Everything
Temple of Geek's prologue run found most furniture destroyable, dropping wood, coal, weapons, and armor. Early inventory space goes fast, so loot aggressively and haul it back to town. Your estate turns those scraps into progress.
8. Rescue Survivors to Unlock Trades
Every rescued townsfolk teaches something — crafts, skills, or town mechanics. Rebuilding is not cosmetic: new residents mean new capabilities. Priority guide: Rebuilding Emberville and NPC Rescue.
9. Cook Before Hard Fights
Cooking is deliberately simple — select an ingredient and hit start — and food goes into battle with you alongside potions. The prologue introduces cooking early, so build the habit before the Spider Matriarch. See Crafting and Cooking.
10. Prepare for the Spider Matriarch
The first confirmed boss is a giant purple spider whose eggs hatch adds mid-fight. Bring area damage or a fast weapon to clear spiderlings, watch the floor, and do not stand still. Full prep: Bosses: Spider Matriarch.
11. Watch the Day Clock
Screenshots show a day counter and time-of-day widget (Day 2, Day 4). Plan dives around it — longer expeditions presumably cost daylight. We will confirm the exact day/night rules at launch.
12. Play the Information Game
There is no public demo, but CohhCarnage's full prologue VOD and DansGaming's gameplay walkthrough show the entire opening. Watching one run before launch teaches the UI faster than any guide. Links: Prologue Demo Guide.
What to Do in Your First Hour (Checklist)
| Order | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Finish character creation (dozens of cosmetic options) |
| 2 | Explore room by room — open or break doors, smash furniture |
| 3 | Survive the hooded figure scripted death, then push on |
| 4 | Claim the humming sphere / Mind's Journal and meet Adeos |
| 5 | Unlock the Wanderer class, equip Focus Strike + Swift Foot |
| 6 | Spend level-up stat points immediately |
| 7 | Beat the Spider Matriarch, reach Emberville, start rebuilding |
Combat Basics Every Beginner Must Know
Previewers agree the combat is fast, reaction-based, and fair — positioning and timing beat stats. The fundamentals:
- Dodge with purpose. The dodge roll has a cooldown COGconnected wished were "more forgiving," so spend it on telegraphed heavy attacks, not chip damage. Dodge through lunges, not away from them.
- Match range to weapon. Swords own close range; bows own distance. Switching mid-fight is expected — carrying one of each is the default loadout, not a luxury.
- Read enemy tells. Spiders rear before pouncing, acolytes glow before casting (their staff beads are literally visible). The game telegraphs; your job is watching.
- Manage the arena. Against packs, circle to avoid surrounds. Against the Matriarch, clear eggs and adds before committing damage windows.
Weapon swapping "could be faster" per previews, so commit to swaps early rather than juggling mid-combo.
Menus Unlock Gradually — Do Not Panic
One of the prologue's smartest touches: menus (inventory, classes, weapons, level, stats) appear in the bottom-right corner as they unlock, each introduced in context. You will never face the full character sheet at minute one. When a new menu appears, stop and read it — WayTooManyGames' previewer missed power by ignoring the class tree for too long.
7 Common Beginner Mistakes
| Mistake | Why it hurts | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Hoarding stat points | Unspent points are zero power | Spend 2 points every level |
| Marrying one weapon | Missed combos, missed class unlocks | Rotate a trainee weapon on easy packs |
| Ignoring cooking | Entering bosses without sustain | Cook before every boss door |
| Skipping NPC dialogue | Missed trades, classes, lore | Talk twice; read books and diaries |
| Skipping furniture | Lost wood, coal, early gear | Smash rooms clean |
| Diving without returning | Full inventory, no crafted upgrades | Bank progress: craft, plant, rebuild, repeat |
| Standing still vs. Matriarch | Eggs hatch onto stationary players | Keep moving, clear adds first |
FAQ
Is Emberville hard for beginners?
Previewers call the combat fast and reaction-based with dodge timing that matters, but the prologue teaches menus gradually (each menu appears in the bottom-right as it unlocks). Expect a learning curve, not a wall.
Can I respec my character?
No respec system has been confirmed. Because classes swap freely and gear levels by use, a "wrong" pick costs time rather than a ruined character.
